Some Random Bits Of Hockey Goodness
Just call him Captain Lidstrom
Nicklas Lidstrom will be the next captain of the Red Wings, replacing Steve Yzerman, the Free Press has learned.
But the team is holding off on a formal announcement, according to a person in the organization, to make a big splash before the season starts. Training camp opens Sept. 15 in Traverse City.
Don't expect Brian Leetch to sign with the Oilers
If Leetch isn't signed by training camp, him to announce his retirement.
Help Wanted: NHL Chief Marketing Officer
The NHL may be without an official CMO this season as Michael LaBroad, who this past February became the first person to hold that title with the league, will not return for the 2006-07 campaign.
According to a league official familiar with the situation, LaBroad recently decided against relocating his family to New York from the Midwest. LaBroad had been living in a hotel since February while looking for a permanent residence.

2006 Light Jerseys
We're looking at ordering light colored jerseys this season to go along with our totally awesome, but too seldom worn maroon sweaters.
We were thinking about maybe a gray jersey instead of the traditional white.
We are looking to order these jerseys within a week or so, so comment or be left out in the cold.

So What Do You Guys Talk About
So, a couple of the wives wonder... what do you guys talk about till 2 am on Thursday nights/Friday mornings. well, Schmidt's Gay beer commercials came up last night. And The Goat's Bro got so excited he extended the conversation to how he and the Goat used to have dancing contests in their basement. While the crack staff at Philadelphiarams.com couldn't find footage of the Schmidt's Gay beer commercials from SNL, one faithful viewer dug this out of his Goat Family films. Enjoy.

We need a good turnout to make up for our weak Summer skates this year. And we need a head count to determine how much food is needed.

Former NHL Agent Arrested
Ex-NHL agent arrested on sex charges
David Frost, the former NHL agent who was once the target of a foiled U.S. murder-for-hire plot hatched by one of his star players, woke up this morning in jail on charges that he sexually exploited four boys and three girls, aged 14 to 16, across a six-year period ending in 2001.
The disgraced coach and mentor-turned-NHL-agent for onetime big leaguers like Mike Danton and Sheldon Keefe, laughed off the allegations in 2004 when the Ottawa Citizen first reported news about the sex exploitation probe.
Bergeron gets bundle from Bruins
The Boston Bruins re-signed standout forward Patrice Bergeron to a five-year, $23.75-million US contract on Tuesday.

Nolan A Coyote
Veteran forward Owen Nolan has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Phoenix Coyotes.
Former Buffalo Sabres winger J.P. Dumont continues to shop around for a new team.
Dumont would prefer to sign with the Montreal Canadiens, and while his agent confirmed the club contacted him over the weekend, they've yet to offer up a contract.
The Detroit Red Wings are shopping around for an experience scoring winger, but GM Ken Holland late last week dismissed reports of his interest in the winger, saying he isn't prepared to pay Dumont's asking price.
Where's Malkin?
No new news.

Sabres Walk Away From Dumont
The Buffalo Sabres have decided not to accept the one-year, $2.9 million arbitration award for winger JP Dumont, making him an unrestricted free agent.
It's been rumored the Sabres were trying to shop Dumont, perhaps in a package deal with goalie Martin Biron, but this move makes clear there was probably no deal to be had, or at least, not one that would've made sense to the Sabres.

Z 2 NYT 4 Mangosteen
Here's one for Z-daldo.
Forbidden? Not the Mangosteen
Perched on a dizzyingly steep slope, in a lush landscape dotted with waterfalls and tall bamboo, Ian Crown celebrated the vindication of what he called his madness in a patch in the jungle. He rustled through the thick, glossy leaves of a nine-foot-tall tree, plucked a reddish-purple orb, cut around its equator, twisted off a hemisphere of thick rind, and popped a few delicate, snow-white segments into his mouth.
“I’ve waited so long for this moment,” he said in July, savoring the floral, sweet-tart flavor of one of the most delicious of fruits, and certainly the most hyped: the mangosteen.

Malkin Still Wants To Play In NHL Now
Malkin wants to play in NHL now
Evgeni Malkin still wants to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins as soon as possible, his agent said Monday, even though Malkin's Russian team announced the star forward has renegotiated his contract and plans to stay out of the NHL for another season.
Russian super league team Metallurg Magnitogorsk posted a story Monday on its Web site that Malkin met late into Sunday night with team officials and had reworked a three-year contract into a one-year deal that would allow him to become a free agent in 2007.
However, Malkin's agent, JP Barry, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that Malkin told him he wants to play in the NHL this season. Malkin also has been quoted in Russia as saying he wants to play in Pittsburgh soon.

Hall More Stingy Than Dowell's 5-Hole
East Falls - In a campus building where Frank Sinatra once wed Greta Garbo, Philadelphia University spokesperson Amanda Huginkiss danced around a very pressing matter Wednesday ...
"Why was Kevin 'The Stopper' Dowell skipped over for induction into the Philadelphia University Hall of fame?
Protesters outside say Dowell, one of the No Back Check League's all-time greatest, deserves to be honored.
After all, who the h-e-double hockey stick are the new members ... Kixx all-star Pat Morris; golfer George Forster; basketball's Eugene Haith; and Karen Wusinich, who lettered in basketball and tennis.
"What? Who? Please? I bet none of them ever played in a championship series at 11:00 am, and walked home (or
somewhere near it) at 3:00 pm blind from Jaeger!," said the "Please let Kevin In" Committee President, Chris Golin. Golin has been lobbying the PU's athletic director for years.
"Kevin is a good guy. He drinks, hangs out, even brings his own seat on Sunday mornings. I can't think of a better alumn to get this honor. and again, he's denied."
Before leaving, Golin said his crew would honor Kevin's goaltending achievements their own way. By playing a game of Kick the Labatt Blue Can. Boys vs.Girls. Later, they planned a pig pile to see if they could bloody Kevin's head again.
"There's always next year. Oh crap, i'm gonna get tagged i better run," Golin said as he booked through the parking lot and down to McMichael park, where base is.
There's always next year.

Tocchet Not Out Of Woods
Trooper expected to aid state against Tocchet
The gambling case against former NHL star Rick Tocchet could take a significant step forward Thursday when a New Jersey state trooper accused of running a multimillion-dollar sports betting operation with Tocchet is expected to plead guilty.
The attorney for one of the men involved with the case said he anticipates James Harney, an eight-year veteran of the State Police, will cooperate with the state in its case against Tocchet and, possibly, James Ulmer as part of a plea agreement. Edwin Jacobs Jr., the attorney representing Ulmer, also told ESPN.com on Wednesday that Harney's plea agreement has been anticipated for some time.

Davis Jones, Patriot, Canes Fan
Fan unapologetic for pulling Canes jerseys off statues
A local resident, unapologetic about his actions, rebuked the North Carolina Historical Commission for not being more upset when state monuments were garbed in Carolina Hurricanes jerseys.
"Do you think Andrew Jackson, sitting majestically on his horse while wearing a Hurricanes jersey was awe-inspiring and thought-provoking?" Davis Jones told the commission. "No, it was a distraction and derailed the purpose of the monument to both educate and honor."
Jones, 49, was issued a citation for injuring the personal property of the state on May 24, when he removed the jerseys from the Union Square monuments. The statues were decorated for the Hurricanes' playoff run.
