Kensington Horseshoes, a Name with History

quoit clubQuoits, washers, or more colorfully, Kensington horseshoes, we’ve played the game but did you know the Kensington horseshoes moniker is more than just a cheeky joke. The game was popular enough to have its own club in Kensington. Check out this photo of the Kensington Quoit Club, built in 1916.

Seemingly the club, much like cricket clubs in the area expanded into other sports and its most famous member was John Nanoski, a Philadelphia born soccer player who has been elected into the US Soccer Hall of Fame. He played for the club in the 1930s.

But at one time quoits was popular enough in Kensington to have its own club built near Front and Indiana Streets. How about that?
