Flyers GM Paul Holmgren trades Downie and Eminger for Tampa defenseman Matt Carle.

    Bad trade. Carle makes 3.5 million based on his 1 good year 2 years ago. He may turn it around but at that cap hit it is a big gamble. By all accounts, he was bad last year for san jose and has been bad this year on a bad Tampa team.
    Steve Downie is really good people. Stevens never gave him a chance and it looks like Holmgren didn’t either.
    So basically, this trade was 1 first rd pick (traded to get Eminger [which everyone knew was a bad trade in June]) a 4th, and Steve Downie for Matt Carle and two third round picks. The flyers could have traded Downie and a 1st over the summer for a real #2 Defenseman. Instead we have a bunch of #5/6 guys. Brutal asset management (most important part of being a GM in modern NHL). I like Holmgren but that is now a bunch of bad/ questionalble moves in a row.
    Hope Carle can turn it around as he has the ability to refute everything I wrote above. Cap just got real tight.

    I don’t think Downie has enough speed to be a very productive NHLer. Eminger was terrible. Turning both of them into a Matt Carle, coming off a bad year or not strikes me as a steal.
    It is worrisome that a good young defenseman has been moved twice in two years now though.
