Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin is the NHL’s offensive player of the week after collecting seven points in four games, while Minnesota goaltender Manny Fernandez won the defensive award.
Ovechkin had four goals and three assists as the Capitals went 1-2-1 for the week. He opened with a goal and assist in Washington’s 4-3 overtime loss to Boston on Tuesday. The following night, he had a goal in a 7-2 loss to New Jersey, then added a goal and an assist in 4-3 overtime win against Philadelphia on Saturday. Ovechkin closed the week with a goal and an assist in a 5-2 loss to Atlanta on Sunday.
Ovechkin leads all rookie scorers and is tied for 11th in NHL scoring with 46 points (24 goals, 22 assists) heading into Monday’s play.
Fernandez, who finished the week 3-0-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average.
