Sizzling Brodeur, Devils blank slumping Isles

Martin Brodeur overcame a first-period injury scare to help the New Jersey Devils rebound from a streak-ending loss.
The Canadian Olympic goalie made 24 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and Brian Gionta scored his 29th goal in New Jersey’s 4-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night, the Devils’ 10th victory in 11 games.

Sakic passes Lafleur as Avs beat Flames

Joe Sakic scored two goals in a five-goal second period for Colorado to help the Avalanche stun the Northwest Division-leading Calgary Flames 7-4 on Tuesday night. The two goals pushed Sakic (561) past Guy Lafleur for 18th place all-time NHL goal scoring list. It also ended an 11-game goal-less streak for Sakic, who last scored on Dec. 30 at San Jose.

Bondra returns to Thrashers’ lineup

Right-winger Peter Bondra returned to the Atlanta Thrashers’ lineup Tuesday night after missing 22 games with a groin injury. Bondra, who came into the game against the Boston Bruins just 10 goals shy of 500 for his career, was hurt Dec. 3 in Anaheim when he got tangled up with Mighty Ducks defenceman Ruslan Salei.
