Surgery on tap for Pitkanen

Joni Pitkanen needs surgery, Robert Esche doesn’t, and Patrick Sharp has a Chicago mailing address.
Pitkanen has been battling abdominal muscle problems for a while, and Monday the defenseman learned he will require an operation to have a tear repaired.
The Flyers say Pitkanen will miss four to six weeks.
As for Esche, the news was much better. Team doctors had suspected he might have the makings of a sports hernia. But after an examination by Meyers on Monday, it was announced that Esche will not require surgery and could be back in about a week.
On the trade front, the Flyers acquired right wing Matt Ellison from Chicago along with the Blackhawks’ third-round pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for center Patrick Sharp and minor leaguer Eric Meloche.
